The Hidden Danger of Industry: Fluid Contact
Coolants (boron oil), water, or gear oils leaking from reducers are deadly for servo motors. Worn and hardened oil seals or rear O-rings allow liquids to enter the motor housing.
What Do Oil and Water Do?
- Blinding the Encoder: Vaporized oil covers the encoder's glass disk. The motor cannot read positions and stops with an alarm.
- Brake Slipping: Oil on the brake discs reduces friction to zero, causing vertical (Z-axis) motors to drop their load.
- Blown Windings: Water and metal-laced fluids are conductive, causing instant short circuits in the stator windings.
First Response and Lab Maintenance
Never try to dry a fluid-damaged motor with compressed air and run it again. At Code Elektronik, fluid-damaged motors are washed with industrial solvents, cured in high-heat ovens, re-varnished, and sealed with high-quality Viton seals.
